I met Roy Emerson yesterday from the British Franchise Association. It occured to us that franchising might be a useful way for family businesses to build and grow their business.

Does anyone happen to know of a paper or article that discusses family businesses and franchising?

I would appreciate any help or thoughts community members might have about this topic.

Best wishes
Lorna

I like the focus you suggest Peter. Something to add to list of things to develop for the BFBC.

Hello Lorna, I think that the interesting thing would be the differences between the internal attitudes and management of franchising within family business to those of non-family business. So to that extent I think that it would be a useful topic to develop. Otherwise the way that franchising works would be the same in either case.

Thanks Peter. You have loads of experience. I wonder if this would be a topic of interest to the Bristol Family Business Community? I have looked through the academic literature and there doesn't seem to be much on this. Perhaps it is a topic to put on the list of things to develop? What do you think?

No, but I did have a lot of practical experience in developing and managing Thorntons franchising operation when we first set it up.
